Frequently asked questions
What’s best to burn, Hardwood or Softwood?
Our Kiln Dried Softwood is predominantly Larch & Spruce.
It is recommended for use in an open fire or fire pit.
Our Kiln Dried Hardwood Logs are predominantly Ash, Oak & Beech.
They will burn hotter and for much longer than Larch or Spruce.
It is recommended for use in a wood burning or multi fuel stove.
Kiln Dried Vs Seasoned?
All stove manufacturers recommend Kiln Dried Firewood for burning
over regular seasoned logs.
As you might expect, the main advantage of kiln dried logs is that they burn hotter and last longer than their seasoned counterparts. Because so much moisture has been removed from them, a greater proportion of their mass is burnable, which is what allows each log to burn for longer.
At North Down Logs, our Kiln Dried Firewood and Kindling are Woodside ‘Ready to Burn’ certified. We guarantee below 12% moisture content for Kindling and below 20% for our Kiln Dried Logs.
I normally just buy nets from the local shop. What’s the difference?
Buying logs from a shop forecourt can be an expensive way of purchasing firewood. Many forecourts still stock wet, unseasoned wood which is stored outside, exposed to the elements. If you buy direct from us, we can save you money, keep your fire burning hotter for longer and deliver straight to your door at a time that suits you.
What about the forests that are cut down to produce wood in this country?
At North Down Logs, we are proud to sell FSC 100% firewood ensuring local forests are being well managed and sustained. The FSC works to ensure adequate care is being taken of our forests and those who rely on them; by protecting plant and animal life, Indigenous Peoples rights, forest workers’ safety and protecting forests for future generations to come.
What size are your logs?
Standard log sizes range from 20cm – 25cm and will fit in any stove, open fire or fire pit.
How much does each sack weigh and how can I tell if your logs are good value compared to other sellers?
As A Rule of Thumb, You should never consider buying firewood by weight, as the wetter it is, the more it weighs. You need to think in terms of how much heat will it produce.
A cubic meter of Kiln Dried Hardwood will last over twice as long as their seasoned counterparts in a modern day stove.
Additionally, they will burn much hotter than the equivalent amount of seasoned firewood in an open fire, therefore far better value for money.
The Hardwood will also burn cleaner and leave far less ash residue.
